Women in focus - The GDK "did it her way”

AIV Alumni

The first online event "I do it my way" by the Gender and Diversity Committee of the D-BAUG was a complete success! Around 200 participants took part in the exchange with five female engineers on current topics relating to gender equality.

Frauen im Fokus

On 4 March, the Gender and Diversity Committee (GDK) welcomed five inspiring female engineers from politics, industry and academia to a lively virtual exchange. Topics such as gender equality, the need for female role models, reconciling family and career, and sexual harassment were discussed. Each of the five women reported from their wealth of experience around gender equality issues.

Great appeal

There was great interest! The topics remain relevant and enjoy increased attention around International Women's Day on 8 March as well as in connection with this year's "50 Years of Women's Suffrage in Switzerland". Over 300 participants registered for the online event and many took advantage of the offer to submit topic-related questions in advance. Around 200 young women and men, mainly belonging to the D-BAUG, joined and participated in the discussion via the Q&A function. Particularly insightful was the participation of ETH Rector and engineer Prof. Dr. Sarah Springman, who also actively contributed to the conversation with various valuable comments.

Lively discussion

The two-hour event was moderated by Prof. Dr. Eleni Chatzi and the doctoral student Firehiwot Kedir, as well as Prof. Dr. Andreas Wieser, a representative of the GDK, who only wanted to say a welcome word but spontaneously decided to play an active role throughout the event, providing great enrichment. The three just mentioned discussed with the following five women: Antonia Cornaro, Dr. Dimitra Ioannidou, Dr. Franziska Schwarz, Dr. Isabella Schalko and Prof. Dr. Olga Fink.
Several questions remained unanswered due to time constraints. Further topics in the field of gender and diversity were touched upon, so that members of the organising committee of the GKD are motivated to consider future events.
