AMIV Alumni: Shipyard tour at Zurich Airport

In just under 6000 steps Eugen Galliker expertly guided us through the hangar at Zurich Airport and the SR Technics engine workshop on May 29 2024.

We learned about the differences between propeller and jet engines and what has changed in this respect over the last few decades. We were then given an insight into the challenges of modern engine overhaul. Each engine is equipped with dozens of sensors that provide SR Technics with live data from the air. After the legal deadlines have expired or in the event of a defect, an engine is completely overhauled. This takes around 50 days and is carried out by 800 specialized technicians. Training to become an engine mechanic takes seven years - including an apprenticeship - and costs around CHF 150,000. To this end, SR Technics is currently training 140 apprentices in 10 different professions. The tour of Shipyard 3 [1], which was built in 1973 with the participation of ETH Zurich, was also impressive. The evening was rounded off with a generous aperitif in the upperdeck restaurant.
