On Friday 22 March 2024, some interested members of the ETH Alumni Group Basel came together for an unforgettable meeting at the Curling Center Arlesheim. Under the expert guidance of experienced curling instructor Charly, the participants bravely ventured onto the ice to learn the basics of this fascinating sport.
For many of us, it was the first time trying curling. We were impressed by the finesse and skill that this sport requires. Under Charly's patient guidance, we tried our hand at the techniques of this fascinating sport. We started by gently sweeping the ice with a broom. We then learned the correct posture, how to balance on the gliding sole, the triggering swing and the correct timing of the spinning stone release. It was a real challenge, but it became more fun with each additional practice round. In the final game, the two teams drew.
After intensive training sessions and the match on the ice, it was time for a well-earned rest. Over an aperitif, we shared our experiences, laughed about our falls and successes and enjoyed the convivial atmosphere. It was inspiring to see how people from different ETH disciplines and years came together to experience and learn new things together.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the dinner together. We reviewed what we had experienced and deepened our conversations about our professional and academic experiences and personal interests. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old acquaintances and make new friends.
All in all, the ETH Alumni Meeting at the Curling Center Arlesheim was a complete success. Not only did we get to know a new sport, but we also created valuable memories and strengthened our community. A big thank you goes to Charly and Urs for their support, patience and organization as well as to all participants who made this day so special. We are already looking forward to the next meeting and further adventures together!
