Besichtigung von Carl Zeiss in Shanghai
Chapter Shanghai Alumni

The brand “Carl Zeiss” reflects a history of more than 170 years providing optical products and solutions, enabling their customers to see beyond. Meanwhile, “seeing beyond” also represents the attitude towards innovation at Zeiss, who invests more than 10 percent of its total sales into R&D activities.
Technology Innovation
We, the ETH alumni, though doing different jobs in various fields around the word, believe in the same value; technology innovations are what pushes the society forward, and good quality products and reliable services are what make a brand long lasting. Thanks to our ETH alumnus Dr. Daniel Freiner, who is the Business Development Manager at Carl Zeiss spectroscopy division in Greater China, we were able to enjoy this guided visit at Zeiss.
Carl Zeiss China Headquarter
Daniel together with his colleagues introduced us to their work at Zeiss and demonstrated how it is related to our daily life. Mr. Henry Cai, the Head of Customer Center APAC, showed us around in the Customer Demo Center of optical and electron microscopes, and explained to us how advanced microscopy technology could enable scientific works as well as quality inspection in industrial processes.
One fun fact that we learned is that a total of 36 Nobel Laurates in history have used Zeiss equipment in their work. Ms. Yvonne Yan, the Communications Manager, introduced us to the Zeiss refractive surgery solutions, and the fact that each year around 15 million operations are done with Zeiss surgical systems.
Dr. Ben Mosig, the Head of Digital Innovation Center, shared his insights into digital innovation, which is obviously an interesting topic to talk about today; especially in China, where every global player is working hard in coming up with its own innovations while learning from domestic Chinese players.
Dr. Wanyin Cui, the Head of Nanoscribe, a Zeiss spin-off, gave us a small presentation on the latest 2pp based 3D printing technology. Dr. Philipp Bastians, the Electron and X-Ray Microscopy Specialist of Asia Pacific, shared his personal career journey as a life scientist in Zeiss.
Networking session
Just like our alumni, most of the speakers had a background in science and engineering. For us, it was very interesting to meet, communicate, and mingle with each other in the tea break and networking session at the end of the tour.
What’s more, Dr. Felix Moesner, the Science Consul & CEO at swissnex China, also took part in the tour. Felix has been working in the interface of academia and industry for the past ten years, connecting the dots in innovation, art, technology, and education between Switzerland and China. Felix has always been an active ETH alumnus in Shanghai and spoke highly of this event.
