Wine-Tasting in Basel
Wein Club Alumni
The ETH Wine Club’s fourth gathering took place on October 6 in Basel. 15 wine enthusiasts with a knowledge level ranging from beginner to advanced enjoyed a tour through the great variety of French wines. The alumni met at the cozy wine cellar “Au Monde du Vin” just across the border on the French side of Basel. A field report.

Sitting around a large table, we got started with a glass of sparkling crémant d’Alsace. The group was well mixed and we are happy that a handful older alumni joined the gathering!
First round of tasting
To start, we were served a variety of fish delicacies (salmon, canned sardines, crab). Staying in Alsace we begun with tasting a Riesling, a local wine. It tasted of spring flowers and citrus, fitting perfectly with the fish. We continued with a fresh white wine from Burgundy Macon. Using a large map of France, we discussed and learned about the many wine regions de la République.
Second round of tasting
We then were served a lush plate of terrines (hand made by the wine shop) and charcuterie, now accompanied by three tasty red wines, two of them organic. First, we tasted a red from Languedoc La Clape (blend of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah), followed by a Cuvée Jules from Côtes du Rhône and a Bergerac from the Sud-Ouest region.
Third round of tasting
As we stayed in France, a great selection of a variety of cheeses couldn’t be missing. These were joined by two whites, a Cuvée Automne (Chardonnay & Savagnin) of the close geographic neighbor Jura-Arbois and a Bordeaux Côtes de Blaye. With everybody already being happy and well fed, the following extra round was rounding it all up.
Extra round of tasting
The delicious dessert of macarons from the local bakery and chocolate éclair was served with a tasty white (Chenin Blanc) from the Loire Anjou region.
Last but not least, we got to joy some heavy material: A Mexican rum and a Scottish whiskey. The evening ended up late as we made our way to cross the border to Switzerland again.
